AVANT GARDE EYEWEAR
For this eyewear, Shonglin was inspired by the solar system and how our planet revolves around the sun and moon and is constantly affected by them. In this age of Covid and human's ignorance towards our planet, it is very important for her that we see ourselves as part of a bigger story i.e., the solar system. We should be grateful to have the resources that we do and practice sustainability.
She used a scrap fan as found object and upcycled it into a wearable artistic eyewear. For the style, she was inspired by vintage futuristic accessories like that of designer Pierre Cardin.
The eyes have a Sun and Moon on it which depict their importance for our existence. The wire around the front represents the invisible orbits of the solar system.
Shonglin used sawing, filing and finishing techniques to make the sun and the moon from Brass. She used cold connection/rivets to attach them to the base. In order to stay true to the futuristic theme, She painted the base of the eyewear cut out from the old fan piece, in liquid metal nail polish. It seemed to compliment the brass very well.
“ROSES IN THE DARKNESS”
For this project, she was inspired by this themed Amethyst necklace from her family’s jewelry collection made of 400 Carats Amethyst representing the darkness and Rubies surrounded by gold representing the flowers in it.
One of the reasons that she chose Amethyst for this project is because it is her birth stone and she has always been very attached to it. It always seems to exuberate positive vibes when she wears it.
She found this piece of jewelry to be as captivating and magical as the Amethyst stone is itself. She wanted to design earrings for her mother, sister and herself.
She focused on designing earrings for this neck piece that are in synch with its story line as opposed to just being separate art pieces.
SCULPTED EARRINGS
For these earrings, she was inspired by the work of famous British artist Tony Cragg. He is known for creating sculptures without a defined form, having unexpected forms from different perspectives.
The brass wires were carefully hammered to create enough surface to punch tiny holes for inserting another brass wire through it to create a branch like structure. This would allow the elements hanging from it to move upon movement. Upon attaching hooks to them, they will make for the ideal minimalist earrings for the modern woman’s taste.
