Now that you have commenced your internship, here's how you can make the most of it:
1. In all the trips that you make to the fabric suppliers, trims shops, factories, etc. make sure that you build a good rapport with them and take their numbers. Making these contacts is essential for you as a budding designer especially if you plan to work in the same city.
2. Do not hesitate to ask any number of relevant questions as the more you ask the more you learn. Even during a simple task as arranging the zippers, you can always ask and learn about the sizes and types that exist and their respective usage.
3. When asked for help by other departments in the same fashion house, show willingness to help them out with tasks as in doing so you will get exposure to other departments. You will get a better understanding of interdepartmental relevance. Interacting with fellow interns will always help you understand their departments better.
4. Always keep a positive attitude and a passion for learning. Especially during high stress times, like when the brand is approaching the release of a new collection try to keep a positive attitude and keep your schedule more flexible to help extra hours in order to get the work done.
5. Always take photos of your work done as a personal documentation of your internship. Even if it is a task like dying buttons or doing embroidery for a client.
6. If ever you find yourself not satisfied with the internship don't wait till the very end. Try to get few minutes with your boss or write an email if he/she is extremely busy. In most cases they will work with you and try to make the internship fruitful for you. Communication is key.
